The first semi-official LFS Live CD that supports UTF-8 (for European
languages only) is now available.
You can download the image without sources from:
http://ums.usu.ru/~patrakov/lfslivecd/lfslivecd-x86-6.x-utf8-r0-nosrc.iso
The image with (non-UTF-8) LFS-6.1 sources included is:

Or, you can build this yourself, the scripts can be checked out from SVN:

Mirrors for the ISO images are more than welcome.
The following package replacements were made:
GNU groff 1.19.1 replaced with Debian Groff 1.18.1.1-8
man replaced with man-db (but the command that displays manual pages is
still called "man")
gdbm added because man-db depends upon either gdbm or db
links replaced with w3m
slrn replaced with tin
slang removed because nothing depends on it
All ncurses programs are recompiled against libncursesw.so.5
The "console" bootscript was modified
Any regression in non-UTF-8 locale support WRT the official LFS-6.1 CD
must be reported on the livecd list as a severe bug.
The LI18NUX2000-Level1 testsuite passes on the CD if you mount /home as
a tmpfs instead of unionfs and unset the TZ environment variable.

That CD was created largely due to Archaic's idea that a sample
implementation will help me push UTF-8 to the book. Well, a usable
sample implementation is there, but I don't think it helps much and that
UTF-8 in the main LFS book (i.e. not a branch) is a good idea.
The issue is that problems related to packages not on the CD (e.g.
inability to print UTF-8 documents from the command line without
packages beyond BLFS) and migration issues are not covered by this
sample implementation at all.
