That's not a valid reasoning, particulary since it was you who said
earlier that no package in LFS should carry a "this is optional"
disclaimer on it. Yes, the idea of LFS is to teach how to build a custom
system, but the point of the LFS BOOK is to give a good idea of how,
exactly, to accomplish this. "The user is still free to choose" is not a
valid reason to include or exclude anything, because the book is
SUPPOSED to be followed. That's why it exists. Yes, users can decide not
to follow it if they want, but then anyone who is still learning (again,
the point of LFS, right?) probably won't have a clue as to whether they
need a particular package (even if the book marks it as "optional") and
anyone who does know what they're doing won't need the book to tell them
what is "optional" and what isn't.
