No, that is the whole problem. The upstream developer has not made it clear what the preferred default is. Like I said in the OP, the autoconf help text says it defaults to "yes" but it actually defaults to "no". Therefore it is a bug and I have sent it upstream with no response so far: http://lists.pld.org.pl/mailman/pipermail/shadow/2005-July/000146.html Hopefully it will addressed soon. Meanwhile, there have been some insightful comments in this thread. It seems to be a little used feature, however, I'm leaning towards leaving it switched on for now as it causes no harm if folks don't use it. Distros seem to have it switched on by default.
