Nathan take a look at the insserv package that already includes a utilty that 
fits the requrements for the bootscript headers (lsb).
how about bringing this util to lfs
and make the needed changes to the scipts

if things start going i'm willing to do the needed changes on the lsb headers 
(the easy part) and to my knowlege you are already working on the hard part 
(functions, ....)
