I just finished installing a system from a build based on LFS-SVN-050316. I've only logged in from the console tty ports.
Lastlog is indeed not properly recording the latest login times.
I'm getting "Never logged in" exactly as you describe.
Just an update.....
After installing PAM, then re-installing Shadow, lastlog is now properly recording the timestamps for tty logins.
Randy, did you try the patch I posted???
