Will finally throw in my twopenneth. Vaughan has been over recent years the best captain in world cricket. Since his injury he has been a below average cricketer (batting and fielding).
So far in the World Cup (and remember it isn't over yet, we're still hanging in there, and 2 wins in 2 winnable matches would put us in the semis) Vaughan's batting has been lamentable, but in many ways as you would expect for a man who has barely held a bat in 18 months - no form, timing, or fluency. But then he didn't purport to be in top nick and he is doing his damnedest to sort it. His captaincy has perhaps also lacked some of its sharpness - perhaps the team sense he is on the wane and are less inspired as a result. But also he is handicapped as his prime strike bowler (Harmo) decided he didn't fancy one-dayers and his lynchpin all-rounder (Freddie) has forgotten how to bat. England did not win the Ashes just because of Vaughan, and we are not struggling now because of him. Of our Ashes winning bowlers, only Freddie is out there. Harmo (retired from 1 dayers), Jones (just coming back from injury), Hoggy (inexplicably regarded as not a one day player, despite him being our most intelligent bowler with a nice off-cutting slower ball). Only Monty can really be seen as an improvement on what there was (but we lose lower order runs as a result). We have to stick with Vaughan for the rest of this campaign. After this, I would like Vaughan to take the decision out of the hands of others and say "I will stand down until I have proven I merit a place in the team", and go always and find form for Yorkshire. One thing you always had to admire about Nasser as captain then player is he knew exactly the right moment to go and didn't try and cling on to the Cook is the logical next generation choice for me, though query whether it comes a year too soon for him. He should be brought into the one day team too, so he can skipper both sides in the medium to long term. Vaughan does not deserve the stick he is getting and merits respect for what he has achieved for us. But after this tournament he along with others does need to think about where now from here, and put the side before self. England tried it and they won't try it again. Last time England did this (when Vaughan got the one-day captaincy and Hussain retained the test captaincy) it led to confusion and muddled thinking - the same players were working for two very different captains with different styles. Hussain says he felt undermined by the fact that the players preferred Vaughan's more laid-back style to his blood'n'thunder approach. If splitting the captaincy was a good idea, why do no other teams do it? As for Collingwood, I can't seriously believe you'd consider him as captain. He has no captaincy experience at all, and he aleady has a heavy workload (batsman, bowler, and our best fielder). The only alternative right now to Vaughan is Flintoff - and the pedalo incident showed a woeful lack of leadership qualities off the field.
