In reponse to a whole bunch of fascinating observations I'd say getting relegated from the Premier League was a whole lot worse than the current predicament. This time it's feasible to go down, regroup, get rid of the glory hunters once and for all, return with a team featuring the best of the youngsters on a roll from winning League One.
Top villians - well you have to include the morons that jeer and boo the players and management. They have done more damage in my opinion than any of the players, managers and coaches post Brian Kidd. Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet are doing ok in my book - Dennis is surprisingly passionate about the job and as has been observed many times, has addressed most of the issues that we all agreed needed fixing - fitness, goalkeeping, getting rid of the dressing room cliques etc. Dare I say it, they should make an excellent impression in League One. Sacking them now would be stupid for the same reason that sacking Blackwell was stupid. It is virtually impossible to turn a club in meltdown around in mid season - ask Alan Curbishley. The account of the management meeting reporting to Bates that there would be a relegation battle this season is interesting to say the least - The writing was on the wall for that team and it is hard to believe that Kevin Blackwell would not have known that. Selling Rob Hulse and Kilgallon to balance the books was a necessity brought on by financial realities. Not replacing them was simply the next step in the inexorable downward spiral - without investment there's not a damn thing anyone could do about it. On the bright side, we may have finally reached rock bottom now that the extra payments are nearing the end. League One could be an opportunity!
