You couldn't have been on the list in the wilko days then. You wouldn't
believe the arguments/debates I had on here about him, and this was the
bloke who got us promotion and the league title. Still the last Englishman
to win the league I think?
Can't even remember what exactly the dissenters (Mr Goodair) held against
him, probably because he was a bit dour.
Ah, those were the days - how fantastic to argue about such things when you
are a top league side :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had no problem with Wilko up to and including the championship winning
season. He did a fantastic job for us in a very short space of time and I
acknowledge his significant contribution to our upturn in fortunes at that
time. From then on though, I honestly believe the guy thought he could walk
on water and he completely lost the plot - the meteoric rise may well have
had a bearing on his very inflated opinion about himself. He almost got us
relegated immediately after winning the title; still, as far as I'm aware,
the only team not to be relegated out of the prem without winning an away
game. The Cantona sale still beggars belief all these years later and is
compounded by the fact that he was undoubtedly the catalyst to Scum's
successes in the mid to late nineties. Add to this several other dubious
signings and bizarre tactics; anyone on this list could have come up with a
better game plan than Wilko did for the 96 League Cup Final. A fantastic
weekend spoilt only by us surrendering any chance of victory the second the
game kicked off!! He really should have gone after that game.
There is another reason, however, why I am less than glowing about our
former championship winning manager. When Busby died he eulogised about the
man in the local press and said together with Shankly and Stein he had been
one of the greatest managers of his era - significantly there was no mention
of the Don. I wrote to Mr Wilkinson and told him that the omission from his
list of managerial greats was an outrage, especially coming from the current
club manager. He replied, saying he had not mentioned the Don because he
had only built a great team and not a great club (unlike the other three)
and that Leeds had gone in to decline in the post - Don era as a direct
result of this - TWAT!!
Presumably Wilko thought he was a much better manager than the glory years
incumbent and would go on to succeed where the Don had "failed"; his head
was the size of Birkenhead - something his managerial achievements didn't
warrant. End of!!
Here endeth the first lesson!!
