I had the same thoughts re: Beckford and other players being potentially great players in Div 1, however I see it as a huge risk. There are more teams in Div 1, plus you tend to get teams coming up from Div 2 having really good seasons, so you'd have the teams you came down with, plus the teams that came up, plus lots of other games where sides will raise their game vs us. On top of all that we will lose over half our team again and have to rebuild, which will mean at least 3 months before we could expect a decent run, by which time it may be too late.
Basically I wouldnt be confident of coming straight back up, and the thought of treading water in Div 1 is just too depressing to think about. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tim Leslie Sent: 21 February 2007 10:04 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LU] tonight Actually he did it very quietly, so I was right! ;-) OK. First up, let me get one thing straight, I will remain as optimistic as I can and genuinely hope we stay up, of course I do. I haven't supported us for 37 years for nothing (Like so many others). But looking at 'the big picture' would another relegation be a bad thing. Bear with me, I know I'm on dangerous ground! In the summer, we will have paid off all the ex players/ex managers et al. The club, if we're to believe figures banded about, will be £12M in debt. Staying up would mean rebuilding the squad AGAIN based on Championship standards, with 3 teams coming down with parachute payments and teams like Southampton, Sunderland and Birmingham all in healthy positions if they don't go up. More journeymen, more 21 year old League 2 hotshots would come, fail and go. Going down would mean those Chamionship failures (ala Beckford) SHOULD be able to do it at League 1 level (witness his goal Saturday). In the meantime, the youth that we've got (Howson, Rose, Johnson ... any more that could realistically make it??) can be brought through and a squad be assembled over the course of a year, rather than a rushed 3 month close season, ready for the Championship again ... Yes I know I'm basing this on coming straight back up! In the meantime, we've no high earners, in the modern game not much debt and still a 40,000 stadium and a catchment area bigger than any single club in the country (on the biggest City 1 club angle) so potentially could be snapped up for not a lot, yes lining Mr Bates' back pocket with a few million for his smoke and mirrors, and build witha plan rather than as a finger in the dam scenario we've put up with since 2004. Any thoughts?? > I'm with you on all this Tim... > > Frankly I think we're doomed - Oh I know someone will have a go at me > for not being positive and supporting the team through the hard times, > but I cannot see a way that we can survive relegation - Unlike Nif who > may well keep very quiet after his comment last night ;-) I would be > delighted and ecstatic to come back here and "eat my words" if we do > survive - I just don't see it.
