Finally relented and went to SOTG for the first time this season. Noticed a few minor changes - no on-street comestibles available outside the ground, so the pie 'n peas is truly a thing of the past. Still, I am far from wasting away.
The fare on the pitch was more acceptable than it has been for sometime. Lewis at left-back worked reasonably well, actually got a few tackles in (which has been one of my previous concerns about our "special team" member). A couple of times he was made (by the bench) to stay in position at LB, rather than saunter up to take a free kick. Butler had a better game, but I suspect that much of this was Gary Kelly related because Uncle was obviously instructed to give Butts close support on the right side of defence, at the expense of the right wing space. Killa has been doing this for Butler's left side for yonks so it still begs the question whether Butler is worth a place. I think not. Your mileage may vary. The midfield didn't work as a unit. People say that our midfield don't get close enough to our front-line or our back-line. My conclusion is that our back four lie way too deep (and have done for ages) to alleviate the mobility problems of Butler (and previously Gregan too). Hence the tendency for any Leeds attack to falter quickly, or simply fall back to perpetual long hoofs. We need to move forward about 20 yards instead of sitting on the 18 yard line. But that would need a bit of pace in the back four, wouldn't it? Maybe that's why Sterling, Dorigo, TC and Speedy Reaney were so good? Kells hasn't had that sort of pace since his last big injury. Der Nephew didn't even have it when he was driving his Porsche. First goal yesterday was well finished by Moore but was well made by Johnson who was well fed by Stack, who for once found somebody who wanted the quick ball. Healy missed a couple of good chances created by Moore and was largely ineffectual. Cresswell huffed and puffed but was generally nuisance value. The ref was crap and inconsistent (so what's new?) happy to book anything that moved in a white shirt and turn both blind eyes to those in red. Douglas and Derry ran about a bit and got stuck in a bit but didn't work as a unit and we still lack a midfield lance-corporal (I've given up hopes of a general, such as Sir John or even Olly). Full marks for the control from the new management team. Crowd quite happy to make pals with "Gus and Den" - Kop quite happy too to sing "Dirty Leeds." Might just go again...
