LONDON, Oct 23, 2006 (AFP) - Leeds United appear to have been thwarted in
their bid to lure Swindon head coach Denis Wise and his assistant Gustavo
Poyet to Elland Road to fill their vacant managerial position.

Leeds were in talks with the League Two outfit to sign the pair as a
replacement to Kevin Blackwell who was sacked in September after the
Yorkshire side's poor start to the Championship season. Leeds, second from
bottom after Saturday's 5-1 defeat to Luton, issued a statement on Monday
morning confirming they were at an advanced stage in their negotiations with
Swindon with only terms for the duo's release still to be finalised.

But later Swindon announced they had withdrawn permission for Leeds to
continue negotiations with Wise and Poyet after failing to reach agreement
on a compensation package.

In a statement the Wiltshire side said: "Over the weekend Swindon Town FC
received a request from Leeds United FC that they be allowed to speak with
Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet regarding the outstanding managerial vacancy at
that club.

"Swindon reluctantly agreed to that request, but made clear they would only
release Dennis and Gus from their contracts if suitable compensation were
paid by Leeds.

"Regrettably it has proven impossible for the clubs to agree a suitable
financial package."

The statement added: 'Dennis and Gus remain valued members of Swindon as
both players and part of the management team." But the League Two club,
whose side sit third in League Two, hinted a compromise could still be
reached.

"While discussions are ongoing between the two clubs, Dennis and Gus remain
contracted until the end of June 2009 and are continuing to fulfil their
duties; both they and the club are determined to ensure that the progress
achieved to date continues. "Both individuals have been offered
significantly improved terms at the club and it is hoped that they will both
remain with Swindon for the foreseeable future."

Wise has strong links to Leeds chairman Ken Bates during the years he spent
playing for him at Chelsea.

Wise and former Chelsea team-mate Poyet signed three-year contracts at
Swindon in May but release clauses allow them to talk to clubs from the
Premiership and the Championship, the two divisions above League Two.

Prior to Swindon, Wise was player/manager at Millwall taking them all the
way to the FA Cup final in 2004 where they lost 3-0 to Manchester United.
