I'm probably going against the grain here, but I thought the article was rather good. I didn't agree with all of it, but the portrayal of the Leeds teams of that era as thuggish, intimidating and unloved, I recall as being largely accurate. It IS true that Lappin conveniently chooses not to mention that there were also bundles of skill and entertainment too, and lots of other things that would undermine his argument, but when talking to most neutral bystanders about those days and those teams, they often have very similar recollections to his and mine.

The Yorkshire Ripper reference is obviously in terrible taste and totally out of order, but I am happy to allow the poetic license in mentioning domestic violence in the same breath as those Leeds teams - there seems to be a certain resonance. I also recall the city of Leeds in the 1970's being a less than "upbeat" place.

I dunno, maybe I remember it differently to all of you, but to me the unpleasantness connected to that team was one of the reasons I found them so attractive. I rather like being unloved in a football sense.
