I was struggling to hear highlights on a radio while riding a train from
Doncaster to London, having been at Bramall Lane that afternoon. When we won
the title I grabbed a beer from the buffet car and when I told the bloke
behind the counter that we were Champions, he just muttered something about
being a rugby man
I was visiting a friend in Hollywood, Calif., and had to call back to my parents to find out the scores of the two games. Then I spent a couple of days waiting for the British papers to make it to Los Angeles newsstands - somehow it didn't seem "real" to me until I'd seen the headlines. (Of course, I still have all those papers somewhere.)
