Don't know why I am bothering....you are obviously so entrenched........

From the Chief Football Writer of the Irish News (Nationalist Based Paper)

The last sentence is particularly apt to you John....you are the one making assumptions about religion, personally I couldn't give a flying [EMAIL PROTECTED] who or how your worship....you are the only one mentioning religion in any of these emails....read back and see if you can get through your bigotry for once....it might be an enlightening experience for you.......then again, probably not.....things can change and do, unfortunately you don't seem to be able too.

Kenny Archer:-
"Those who wish to live in the past and apply outdated labels to all Northern Ireland fans are the real bigots"

Kenny Archer, Chief football writer for the Irish News, in his "Hitting The Target" piece in Wednesday's paper:
"THE world is back turning on its axis almost a week after Northern Ireland's incredible victory over the multi-million pound men of England, but that shouldn't diminish the significance of that result.
The home players were all magnificent, even if they were actually ill-served by some newspapers awarding every single one of them `10 out of 10', rather than the genuine high marks they all properly merited.
Highest mark of all, though, should have gone to the Northern Ireland fans, their backing for their team worthy of 9.9 out of 10 Á well, nobody's perfect.
In complete contrast to the so-called supporters following England, who were noticeable only by their silence, the home fans hardly seemed to stop singing all night, certainly not until long after the final whistle finally came.
The chants from the Northern Ireland sections may not have been entirely positive, with a modicum of abuse directed at some English players (and even one wife), but that's entirely to be expected from football fans.
What was positive, though, was the absence of any significant sectarian element to the home support. This isn't to praise anyone for `having stopped beating his wife'; sectarianism and bigotry should never be tolerated, should never have been tolerated, even if they're part of life in this particular part of the world.
Yet if you complain about faults, surely you have to acknowledge when they're corrected. Admittedly being in the press box muffles some of what's being sung, but rest assured that if there had been anything untoward from the Northern Ireland fans it would have been seized upon by certain sections of the media.
There was a half-hearted call of `No Surrender' during the joint singing of `God Save The Queen'/the national anthem* (*delete as applicable), but that was more an act of defiance to the English, making clear that this wasn't just their anthem, that Northern Ireland mattered too.
That apart, there was nothing to offend even those who keep their ears pinned back in the hope that they will hear something unsavoury.
Of course, the presence of Ulster/Northern Ireland is understandably unappealing to the eyes of many in the nationalist/republican community. But by the same token people cannot seriously argue that unionists/loyalists should forget about Northern Ireland and feel comfortable in supporting the Republic of Ireland with all the attendant sounds and symbols associated with international matches at Lansdowne Road.
IFA President Jim Boyce rather optimistically expressed the hope that Northern Ireland fans would stop saying `I don't support the Republic of Ireland', and vice versa. The truth is that it's in the nature of football fans to want their rivals to fail, or at least not to succeed.
Yet the whole island of Ireland should have been united in wanting `the north' to beat England.
Instead, there was an extraordinary response to this match from those who usually spend their lives adhering to the maxim `burn everything English but their coal', a reaction that would have been laughable if it hadn't been so sad.
Contorting themselves to justify supporting England in this instance, they ended with their heads up...well, let's just say they looked and sounded rather foolish in their hastily improvised position.
The evidence of recent days Á and nights Á illustrates that there remains a serious sectarian problem in our society in the north.
However, tremendous work has been done by Jim Boyce and especially the IFA's Community Relations Officer Michael Boyd in stamping out sectarianism at Windsor Park for Northern Ireland matches.
The reality is that the vast majority of those in the crowd at Northern Ireland matches now go along simply to support their team, to back players from their part of the world; that's it. They go to follow football, not to make any political statement.
Those who wish to live in the past and apply outdated labels to all Northern Ireland fans are the real bigots"

as you seem to be a  man of facts here are another few

a)    I am not a Celtic supporter . I am a Leeds united supporter. My references to Neil Lennon are based purely  on a recent newspaper article about him. I don't know the rag in question but if I'm not mistaken it may have been an extract form his upcoming/released autobiography.

b)    Yes you are right the final straw that caused him to leave the N.I. team of which he was captain at the time was the threat to him. He also went into great depth about the abuse he took and in his own words it  was because he was a catholic and a Celtic player. he didn't get that kind of abuse when he was with Leicester. He did consider quitting because of the abuse also, but was dissuaded in part by the N.I. manager - Sammy Mc.

c)    You have assumed I am a catholic because I am from the republic/name. who is being sectarian here? I didn't realise the Republic of Ireland had a barring order on all creeds bar cat holism because how else could you assume I was catholic. You might note that I made no such assumptions about you.

d)     You keep plugging the sectarian angle at me. Why is that? Is it because I am from the Republic, there I must be a sectarian, as well as a fenian as well as a roman catholic.  All assumptions on your part and it is you who have let the mask slip and shown yourself to be the true sectarian here

I stand corrected if Windsor Park is the sweet fun & friendly place  you claim it to be. Please allow me to be to be a small bit skeptical.

Firstly the award was not given by me....it was given by an international committee whom I would hazard a guess would have know about the bad old days.  The award was given for what's happening now, not then......but let's not let "dragging the past up" get in the way of a jibe............

If you knew any of the facts regarding the "Lennon" situation......JESUS!
He left the game because of some so-called loyalist [EMAIL PROTECTED] who phoned up and made death threats against Neil.  Unforgiveable actions by the lowest scum in society.
I was at Windsor Park when all true supporters called for Neil to rethink and not give into a moronic minority who, chances were, nothing to do with Northern Ireland Supporters.

Funny how Martin O'Neil, Pat Jenning and Sir Lord Gerry Armstrong to name but a few, have never been hounded out of the internation scene, all good practicing Catholics and living legends of the Northern Ireland Football Team.  I have no idea how many young Catholics we now have playing for Northern Ireland, as I have no idea how many Protestants...it doesn't matter...what matters is, sectarianism has no place in Norn Iron soccer and families from both sides of the community attend in, what can only be described as a family atmosphere.  Of this I am proud, and this has now been recognised by this award.

And as for Neil Lennon not being welcomed back....show's your ignorance, you know nothing. Could I presume you might be a Celtic fan?  Would Celtic like Neil back playing for Northern Ireland? I would! I have a fantastic signed pic of Neil on my wall with him wearing the Green and White and myself and every true supporter would have him back instantly.........many attempts have been made including Mr Sanchez.

But hey, as I've said before....never let a good chance to bring back sectarianism in the forefront get in the way of actual modern change in football.

David Healy today dedicated the three wining goals that defeated Spain to the Amalgamation of Official Northern Ireland Supporters Clubs who received the prestigious UEFA, IOC and EU endorsed Brussels International Supporters Award prior to kick off at Windsor Park on Wednesday night.
“I was delighted to hear that our Supporters have won this award for their efforts to create a more inclusive, fun and family orientated atmosphere at games. The change in atmosphere over the last six years at Northern Ireland games has been tremendous and all credit must go to the Fans. Their passionate support inspires the Players and I am happy to dedicate my goals to them on the night they received international recognition as officially the best Fans in Europe!”
Radio DJ and TV Presenter Colin Murray who helped present the Supporters Award on the pitch echoed Healy’s comments:
“The Northern Ireland Fans are top class and the Amalgamation of Official Northern Ireland Supporters Clubs richly deserve this recognition for the work they have carried out to create a passionate atmosphere at games that everyone from Northern Ireland can be proud of. Once I heard about the award I was happy to volunteer my time to help shine the spotlight on their achievement. The award will look nice next to the British Home Championship Winners Trophy that we own!”
IFA Head of Community Relations, Michael Boyd, who nominated the Northern Ireland Supporters for the award added, “Northern Ireland football is back on a high and no one group of people have been more instrumental in this renewed euphoria surrounding our international team than the Amalgamation of Official Northern Ireland Supporters Clubs. They won this Supporters award on merit and delegates from Brussels who traveled to Belfast for the game couldn’t believe just how amazing ou

How is it  a sectarian jibe to state what is a fact. This didn't happen in the dim and distant past, this was only in the last 2-4 years.
I made no reference to the team composition because I makes no difference to me what denomination anybody belongs to. That is a private personal choice.

If supporters of any team behaved in that manner, it would cause the same offence. If N.I played the Republic and supporters in the republic behaved in a likewise manner, what message does that send out??

Are you now saying that if Neil Lennon came out of retirement and made himself available for selection and was selected, he would be greeted with almost universal acclaim. I wish it were so, but I would have my doubts.

As I said before, hearty congrats on a great victory from a typical sectarian person in the republic

Oh and by the way, I think you'll find a lot of the Northern Ireland heroes were/are still catholic!
But never let a chance to get a sectarian jibe in, go by.............eh John?

Some things will never change....no matter how hard people try....

it's a bit rich to call "the green & White Army" the best supporters in the world, when their real claim to fame is the hounding out of Neil Lennon for the 2 grievous sins of being;

a)    A Catholic

&

b)    playing for Celtic

That aside, it was a great win .

SUPPORTERS AWARD WELL DESERVED
07/09/2006
by Colleen Macauley
Last night was memorable not only for the fantastic performance on the pitch, but also for the performance from the stands.

The Green and White Army proved they are the best supporters in Europe and worthy winners of the Brussels International Supporters Award. The ceremony on the pitch before kick off was a fitting tribute to the dedication and vision of the Amalgamation of Official Northern Supporters.

Jim Rainey as inspirational ‘figurehead’ accepted the award on behalf of all supporters to the voluminous chant of ‘there’s only one Jim Rainey’ and proved to the Brussels contingency that their decision making process was as accurate as any of Healy’s three goals.

Philippe Housiaux, Chief Executive of Dialogic was overwhelmed by the experience at Windsor Park for yet ‘another night in September’. He explained the decision was taken as a result of a paper-based exercise but the reality of the atmosphere reinforced their choice.

The delegates were particularly impressed by the attitude of the supporters during the Spanish National Anthem with their respectful silence followed by tumultuous applause. He concluded that the evening would forever remain a lasting memory of their short spell in Belfast.

Well done to ALL Northern Ireland Supporters.
