A unique station for a unique county. That is how Leeds United chairman Ken Bates describes Yorkshire Radio, an exciting new DAB digital radio station, which is only weeks away from being transmitted.

Yorkshire Radio will serve the country's biggest and greatest county from its base next to the Elland Road stadium in Leeds and will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its range will have the greatest digital coverage outside London and will extend from Catterick and Darlington in the north to Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire and Dronfield in Derbyshire and from the Pennines to the North Sea.

"This gives us a potential audience of some four to five million listeners," added the chairman, who is masterminding the new station. "Since coming to Leeds I have been very impressed by the people of Yorkshire and the vibrancy of the county and I think they deserve a
radio station to match," he added.

The new station will broadcast a range of programmes that do not exist anywhere else, designed to entertain, amuse and inform the people of Yorkshire and beyond. Music to suite all tastes will be on offer and, of course, there will be interviews with personalities and extensive sports coverage, which will include junior and non-league football.

DAB digital radio is catching on fast and more than a million sets are sold each year in the UK. Diane Wray, managing director of MXR Digital said: "I am delighted to welcome this new and exciting service onto the MXR Yorkshire multiplex. I am sure the population of Yorkshire will be thrilled with the new station's 24-hour-a-day music, news and sports output and will be looking to buy their digital radios."

Yorkshire Radio's board will consist of Ken Bates, Jayne McGuinness, Mark Taylor and Shaun Gregory, who will be a non-executive director. Mr Gregory has first class business development skills and a track record that spans, radio, television, magazines, newspapers and digital/interactive media. Ben Fry, who was previously head of presentation and promotions for the two Yorkshire Coast Radio licences in Scarborough and Bridlington, has
been appointed station director.

Ben has also presented the Monday to Friday five-hour 'Big Fun' breakfast show. "I am delighted to have a young man with such experience and ability on board," said the Leeds chairman. Fitting out work on the studio complex has already begun and all the equipment has been purchased.
