You will have gathered that it still angers me that they see this as a
glorious episode in Turksih football. Remember the pitch battles in
Copenhagan with Arsenal fans.
Putting aside that Turkish teams should not be playing in Europe anyway, I
totally agree if we had refused to play the match then other clubs would
have rallied behind us and UEFA would have had to do something about this.
I havent seen Ridsdale banging on about the pathetic handling of this case
by the Turkish judiciary have you!

Phill

from his heart would have told them to have the tie and brought the lads
home. Ironically he would then have been a hero for ever.
I also realise I am a minority view on this.
I have to agree with you. I understand why the club played the fixture but
I would much rather they had flown the team home and given UEFA the problem
of what to do about it. I think there is a lesson which still has to be
learned by the Turkish fans and the Turkish clubs and I hope somebody else
doesn't get killed before that lesson is learned. There is little doubt
that the Turkish clubs regard this level of intimidation and hate as a part
of their armoury and that is unlikely to change without somebody taking a
drastic step such as refusing to play them. Perhaps UEFA need to tell the
Turkish FA that if anything of the kind ever happens again then the match
will not be played and their team will be kicked out of Europe. Perhaps
they have already done this without any publicity. I hope so, but I have my
doubts. Many years ago I went to a Turkish league game in Istanbul and the
police were walking around the pitch with loaded sub-machine guns. I don't
think the story is over yet and there will be future incidents.
