Further update in case anyone has any ideas. The C2600 device on which I'm testing has two ethernet adapters with their own dedicated connection to the switch, with the default config such that eth0 is WAN and eth1 is LAN, configured with untagged vlans on the switch.
I've tried two alternate configurations 1) Using eth0 only as LAN and WAN using vlan tagging as on platforms with only one ethernet interface+switch connection 2) Same as above, but using only eth1 Configuration 1) leads to similar results as the default with both interfaces. Configuration 2) seems rock solid. (But will continue to push it a bit longer.) So it sounds like there's something not right about the configuration/initialization of eth0 on this platform. Since the ap148 and netgear R7500/D7800 are configured in the same way, it might be useful if someone with one of those can try to reproduce. There was also some strange ethernet behaviour on the Linksys EA8500 which Adrian and I were discussing in https://github.com/lede-project/source/pull/6 which may turn out to be related.
