I have also noticed this.  I think part of the reason is that the
default font height for GTK2 in Lazarus is 14 (the font for the Lazarus
editor was changed to 14 from 12 after I recompiled Lazarus for GTK2),
while under GTK it is 12.

Maybe a feature where one specifies the default font height would
partially fix the sizing/visibility problem of text in fixed width
controls like buttons?
