I feel that main causes of these debates are (1) that the definitions in DXE are not nice (at least completely ignoring any portability issues), but fpc/Lazarus is forced to follow rather closely whatever Delphi does. and (2) that Lazarus only can use what fpc offers and thus Unicode awareness was implemented before fpc provided Unicode-Delphi compatible Strings, resulting in incompatibility in multiple directions.
