On the same theme as Rolfk..... Before P.Cs had sound cards I think you will find the Beep came through the P.C's internal speaker. Perhaps the beep is not being passed to the sound card (Driver or card issue).
Perhaps you could check that the P.C. has an internal speaker fitted and if it is missing try fitting one.
