Trouble interfacing with HP34401a multimeter

I' am having trouble using the HP 34401A VI with LabVIEW 7.0. I am
connected to the multimeter via a serial cable (COM 1 on the PC). It
doesn't seem to be communicationg with the meter (there is no change
in the meter front panel). Also - I occasionally get an error message
1073807339 occured at VISA Write in HP34401a Control Mode.vi->HP34401a
initialize.vi->hp34401a getting started.vi possible reason: VISA :(Hex
0xBFFF0015) Timeout expired before operation completed.
