Eric,

The ipw intel series are generally well supported.  I prefer intel hardware
for my linux machines (video, wireless, audio, etc) due to its support.

I have a broadcom 4306 in my current machine (works, but non-free) and an
atheros on my macbook (works, but non-free).  Just some thoughts.

Generally I say stay away from broadcom though.
