Larry's explanation is exactly correct (at least for the -4 firmware) and his solution is what I do at my desk. If I'm with someone, we're not disturbed by every call that comes in, but if I'm waiting on a call or am alone, I can glance over and see if I want to grab the call (usually before the front desk gets it).
