why not just give him a few phantom numbers?
give his station a new number and put the old one on it as a phantom. or
put in on the secy phone.

the system is flexible, and he can learn to better manage his numbers ;-)

we have a customer that assigns a new ext (phantom) for each project,
once finished, it's retired for a few years.
