This sounds like the Serial Connection/Settings got hosed. You should try changing to a new Serial Cable first, then go in and reset your serial (RS232) settings on the 816 & the printer. (my standard config on both printer & pbx is 8,1,N - 9600)
You may have to go down to a lower speed setting (like from 9600 to 4800). To isolate the problem, connect that cable to your laptop or pc, and open hyper term and see if you get data on the screen, if yes, then fix or replace the printer, if no, then consider a new post to this group on "how to fix a bad serial port on a KXTD 816"...
