The message lamp is most likely not being lit by the voicemail, it is probably being lit by another phone (yes, you can manually turn message lamps on and off- a feature that a receptionist would use if they didn't have voicemail).
The number that appears when you press the message button is the extension that made the lamp light up. To turn off the lamp press [intercom] 700 xxx where xxx is the ext number with the lighted button. 701xxx turns on the lamp.
