Version-Fu:

upgrade -1 to -2 requires a motherboard change
        upgrade -2 or -3 to -4 requires a ROM change, approx. $220 + manuals.
upgrade to -5 requires a motherboard change, approx. $900? or so.
        upgrade to -6 requires ???

I upgraded a -2 system to -4 in order to take advantage of additional
software features.

If I had two systems, I would want them at the same version for sanity. I
might even use the backup system at home (hot spare).

If I wanted two -4 systems (for the added features), I would find someone
who is interested in upgrading their -4 to -5, buy a new -5, and then swap
with them in return for some portion of the avoided upgraded cost.

BTW: A certified dealer is supposed to keep a KX-TD1232 available in
inventory to provide customers with a spare. If you bought your system from
a local dealer and are paying some sort of maintenance, or are paying for
ongoing support, you might be able to use the dealer's system in an
emergency. Alternatively, you could have a new system shipped to you in a
day or two. It depends on the duration of outage that you can tolerate.

You can upload the software from your -2 into a new system (4 or 5), but you
may want to use the newer system as your main box and keep the older one as
a back up. Trouble with this is then you cannot take the programming from
the -4 or -5 and put it back into the -2!
In other words the programming can be transported to higher versions but
once it has been loaded in it changes, and it cannot be copied back out and
put into a lower version.

You CAN upgrade a -2 to a -4 by changing chips, or you could upgrade the -2
to a -5 by changing the cpu mother board.

So you could get a -5, keep it as a backup until you get some extra cash to
upgrade the -2 to a -5, then you would have matching systems.
Or get a -4 and match them with a chip upgrade.
Or find a used -2 around. I will have a used -2 motherboard next week as
I'm upgrading one to -5 this weekend. If you found even a -0 or -1 you can
upgrade it to a -2.

good luck
Charles
