Bob, if you're into it, you could get wire up a higher power mic to the box, perhaps mount one inside or remote it. You can also remote the speaker. I had to wire up a separate mic on a DoorKing intercom at a drive-up entrance.
I was just at a residence using a Viking box, the audio seemed to be weak, but when I went out to look at the door, the box was about 10 feet from the doorway. They would probably to a better job, but you still might need to adapt a better mic though.
