Most telcos use "smart jacks" (line interface) which
let them loopback for testing their loop eliminating
-any- dependence on CPE.

There could be another reason for the insistence of
the CSU, the 187 seems a little "lite" on line
protection.  They might not honor warrantee if you
didn't use one.

Also, there isn't much gain adjustment on the 187 ;-)
(telco takes care of this unless you are over 150 ft
from the T-1 jack.)
