With libc6:i386 installed and using the procedure mentioned in #1 (thanks Rik!), the ugrade worked perfectly! It also fixed the issue with the agonizing slow "Searching for software" step.
I have seen this issue in the last couple (several?) upgrades and I glad it is finally resolved!
