Public bug reported: During fresh install and using the direct install option (not the "Try Kubuntu desktop"), the session went into screen lock mode prior to completing the install. Hitting enter on the password prompt failed, but selecting the Switch User option allowed an empty password and screen unlock. However, instead of returning to the install progress screen, the screen was entirely black except for the mouse cursor.
