First of all, thank you very much for looking into this, and putting
effort into a fix.

I do have some questions about the test plan. Why are you downloading a
separate piece of source code to run the test? Why does the upgrade need
to be interrupted and restarted manually?

I understand that from time to time (and testing during development)
it's necessary to unpack the tarball directly and short-circuit the
usual fetch-and-execute logic. But in this case, what I expect to work
(and hence what I would like the test case to reflect) is that upgrading
from plucky to oracular using the Qt6 backend "just works".
