Public bug reported:

Testing with a fresh install of xubuntu 22.04, with all updates
installed. I switched from lightdm to sddm:

  $ sudo apt install sddm

  (during install, I'm prompted to switch from lightdm to sddm)

  $ sudo systemctl disable lightdm
  $ sudo systemctl stop lightdm
  $ sudo reboot

I've created 3 users: "steve" (via the install process), "user1" and
"user2" via useradd.

When I log in as "steve", I bring up the user switch screen via the
logout button on the Applications menu and clicking "Switch User". From
there, I can log in to user1. From user1's session, I can switch to
user2. When I attempt to switch back to either steve or user1, the
target's desktop is shown for a very brief instant (maybe .1s) before
returning to user2's desktop session.

Another scenario with just 2 users: after boot, log as "steve". Switch
to user1. Attempt to switch back to steve. The desktop session for user
steve is shown briefly before returning to user1. Log out of user1's
session. At the greeter, switch back to user steve. The current desktop
session has been destroyed and now a new desktop session for steve is
shown.

This is quite easy to reproduce, so please let me know if any other
details would be useful.
