@ahasenack ibayatana-appindicator3-1 is a fork of now unmaintained libappindicator3-1. libappindicator3-1 is the library most apps prefer to link against and depend on. For example, Spotify .deb requires it. I tested a few apps and they all work as expected.
Sub-menus are still broken for Dropbox indicator under Plasma but do work for other apps (eg 'pasystray'). There are no issues with package migration/upgrade and fresh install (see comment #10 for details).
