Since Hoary till Breezy that I'm still using I've tried with every single kernel up to the last one. I have Dapper installed on another partition for some time but I couldn't find in the repositories the smp version of the kernel. My system is up to date and every time a new kernel pops up I try the new smp version to see if it works but it still doesn't. The machine still freezes in X (the gray screen before KDE's login screen appears). I don't remember if I mentioned I have a Pentium with hyperthreading. Anyhow, it boots fine in smp mode both with Mandriva and a Knopix live CD so I figure the problem is not the machine... If you need me to try again and if there is a log file I can send you back to help track the problem I'll do it willingly.
