To expand on the subject a bit, winds at altitude are not always as
forecast. Any time I flew cross country I would establish a constant
climb speed early in the climb out. Trim and hold that speed for the
entire climb to cruise altitude. The accuracy of your ASI is not a
factor as it only serves as a reference. Monitor your ground speed at
each predetermined altitude during the climb and note the fastest ground
speed. To have the most advantageous ground speed for the flight might
require a decent to a lower altitude. Make sure you track the "magenta"
line so you include any crab angle needed to stay on course.
The best tailwind I've ever experienced was with the Tripacer years
ago. I trimmed for 100 mph cruise climb and watched the ground speed
number continue to climb until it reached 60 mph above my indicated
airspeed. Unfortunately, the return trip the ground speed was 60 mph
below my indicated airspeed. Not everything is free............
