Larry,

I’ll take this on, it really needs to be done. I nominated Chapter 91’s Young
Eagle Coordinator for his 20+ years of service for an EAA commendation, and he
got one.

What I would need help on, is the history of the design. Really, how Stu
interacted is the part I’m sketchy on. I can run internet searches as well as
most others, and am willing to do so. I would need a few entry points into the
research. Your memories, and Mark’s and John’s and others, would be a good
starting point. My last post on the net concerning this referenced that
assistance that would assure that this nomination results in success.

FYI: I was active on the old newsletter and still have a couple of copies in
my possession. Sold my project due to divorce in the mid-90’s. Had one of
GPAS’s assisted build VW engine on it (2080 was all I could afford then), with
sanded wings on original retracts. Was in Jenks when Dan did his first public
demo of assembling his wing skins. I helped Jim Faughn build his plane-
nothing major, just helped. I was honored when he waited until I could get to
St Louis to do the initial start-up of his Great Planes VW in his driveway.
After 10+ years of marriage to Janet, I revealed that I wanted to fly again;
more specifically- to finish a KR. This wife loves flying and aviation (since
she was 16), and the rest is just an aviation journey for us both. Due to my
age (73), I probably can’t pull off the first FreeBird, but I would sure be
willing to give it a try!

Subject: KRnet> Fwd: Homebuilders Hall of Fame

Since I challenged the KR community a week or so ago to try to get Ken and Stu
inducted in to the Experimental aircraft Hall of Fame, a few thing have
happened. This is to bring everyone up to date.

I contacted Jeanette Rand and she will provide any help possible. I have
possibly located the last know address of Stuart Robertson. Chris Pryce lives
close to that location and will check it out. I fear that Stu has
unfortunately passed away recently. Let's hope that is not the case.

I contacted Marc Cook at Kitplanes magazine, they did a nice article on the 50th
anniversary of the KR, and asked for their assistance in submitting the
nomination. My post to him is below and his reply in red. Is there anyone on
the net that has the time, experience, and would like to take on the challenge
of completing the nomination form with the input we will have available? If
not, submit you input to me at
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> and I'll complete the form
for submission. I'll attach two items. We'll see if they come through.

See you all at Mt.Vernon...............

Mr. Cook,

I recently learned that the EAA has a "Homebuilders Hall of Fame" and that Ken
Rand and Stewart Robinson, designers of the KR series of experimental, have
never been inducted as members. As the builder of a KR2, logging 800 hours of
flight time over 20 years, and hosting 15+ KR Gatherings at Mt.Vernon,
Illinois, I feel this is a blatant over-site. I have challenged the KR
community of builders and fliers to work on nominating them so they will
receive the honor they greatly deserve. It will be posthumous for Ken but his
widow, Jeanette, and three daughters are still living and would be grateful to
see their husband and father receive such an honor.

I've done considerable research on trying to locate Stewart Robinson with no
success. Jeanette Rand has lost contact with Stewart also and I'm not sure if
Stewart is still living. The last Jeanette knew he had moved to northern
California. If he still survives it would be great if he could attend the
induction if their nomination is successful.

Your magazine did a great cover story of the 50th anniversary of the KR series
with Scott Spangler being the author. https://www.kitplanes.com/the-kr-at-50/
It would be beneficial to our efforts if Kitplanes magazine and staff agree
with our efforts and could assist us in any way. If your staff could assist us
with writing the nomination or in researching the information to complete the
nomination it would be greatly appreciated.

I recently had a phone conversation with Jeanette Rand and she fully supports
our efforts and will help in anyway possible.

I will attach a copy of the nomination form as well as well as a copy of some
thoughts I put on paper to start the effort.

Your review and assistance would be greatly appreciated.
