For me it's all freehand, I keep my iPad open to keep track of my breadcrumbs and I come up with an idea ahead of time. If I plan on skywriting with breadcrumbs, I write it out large in cursive ahead of time on my scratchpad to plan my turns. The KR is thankfully a very maneuverable platform and helps quite a bit with doing these designs in smaller spaces. It's a fun way to spend a day if there's nothing to see or nowhere to go and you just want to get up in the air. Just put some music on and have fun with it!
