If you you plan on lots of far away visits, 30 gal is a good number. Your bladder is the real dictator. In short, there is no wrong answer. Mine holds 27 gal. When I go see the parents, (290 nm away), I add 5 + gal for the  return for good reserves.

For those who have a larger-than-VW engine, what total capacity do you think is enough?

Griff,

Define "larger-than-VW" engine.  Don't you have a Revmaster on your KR2?  It's pretty close to the same displacement as the VW on N891JF, and I can tell you that it burns something like 3.3 gallons an hour, in part due to the very efficient Ellison carb.  Worst case would be 4 GPH, unless you are crazy enough to run it wide open for several hours at a time, and even then, you probably wouldn't exceed 5GPH.  At least that's my experience.  Others may have different opinions, but that's mine.  N891JF has a 14.5 gallon tank on it, and that's plenty to get me where ever my back and bladder can handle.

Given the price of 100LL and 87 octane auto fuel, I don't fly anywhere wide open.....I just leave a little earlier to get there at the appointed time (usually for lunch with other KR fliers).

Having said all this, I put two 8 wing gallon tanks in N56ML.  I later added another one in the outboard right wing, just so I could fly back non-stop from OSH.  Once I get up to 10,500', it's a hassle to come back down and climb back up again.
