Just for clarification and this is just in the UK, but I expect it is the same
in Europe, we can only build the original KR2 to the original design. MAUW of
900 and a max empty weight of 580lb. Any heavier and it becomes a single-seat
aircraft only. That is the law. I'm not actually that sure of the MAUW of the
KR2S. I don't have it at hand. But again, it must be limited to that MAUW and
not a single pound or kilo over.

So weight and balance become very important. The American way of bigger is
better, we just can't do. That is why there are no thoughts of just putting an
0-200 in it and not worry about weight or C of G range. That's why we go for
lighter more efficient engines. Think yourself lucky if you like, to live in
America and have the Experimental category to do as you like. We can't do that
here in the UK and probably not in Europe as well.

Also, I'm not sure about the States, but our aircraft have to be inspected each
year by an independent inspector for its annual inspection. These inspectors
can be quite thorough and if they are new to the aircraft, they will want to
trawl through the original paperwork again to check it all and make sure there
are no errors that have been missed. So even if the aircraft has done 1000
hours like mine, I could be asked for the original weight and balance
calculations. He isn't missing any boats, he just wants to see the paperwork.
Yes, there seems little point, but as he is the guy signing your aircraft off
and he might be doing you a favour, so whatever he wants to see for whatever
reason, you find it for him.

Thank goodness, being a licensed aircraft engineer, our governing body let me
sign my own annual. But for others, it can be quite a problem finding an
engineer prepared to put his signature and his career on a KR2.
