I don't ever recall seeing aircraft grade ply with circular grain and evidence of knot patterns.  You mentioned in a private post that it was "aircraft grade" from Wicks.  Am I the only one that sees this a questionable?

It would seem to me the force on the web is more in shear or tension than compression as evidenced in the photo.  The web appears "pulled apart", not compressed.
