Out of 100 GA enthusiasts who own aircrafts (either homebuilt or certified):

Dr. Hsu,

The easy answer to your question is "people are doing what they are doing because that is what they are comfortable doing or enjoy doing".   The reason the #1 group is so small is because of the limitations of the airplanes we are flying.  They are 100% weather dependent.  Even major airlines, with their capable equipment, are often grounded by weather.

There is an old saying, "be careful what you wish for".  I recall magazine articles from 60+ years ago about an "airplane in every garage".  We're probably fortunate that has never happened.  Can you imagine airplanes in the air as numerous as cars on the highway?  Even with great roads and traffic control we're killing 30,000 people a year.  Our yards would be covered with airplane parts from the many wrecks.  There is no way to define flight paths as restricted as cars on highways and if we do would that eliminate the benefit of flying point to point?

Given human history, things have developed the way they have because of practicability.  An airplane in every garage is just not practical.

Finish your project and enjoy it as much as you are capable of. Everything in life has it's limitations.
