Larry - After working for Boeing for 44 years, I know that the costs of getting and retaining certification through the FAA are high and do need to be amortized by any company to make any kind of a profit - especially on a small market like GA. We can get numerous things from auto parts stores that can go on our experimental airplanes that would cost much less than the same item going on a certified airplane. If the FAA would go after those that use experimental parts on certified airplanes with appropriate fines and publicized it (especially for things as expensive as ADS-B out) maybe suppliers could maintain a two tier pricing structure - but, unfortunately, we all know that isn't going to happen
