Phil,

Don't over-think this.  It is nothing more than human nature and the resistance to change.  We ( I and other old people) grew up and were educated in "inches", "feet", "yards", "miles", and the like and refuse to change.  We have a mental image of measurement that is too difficult to re-program.  I'm still not sure if I'm hot or cold when I hear the temperature in Celsius. As the young pilots trained in knots mature through the ranks it will change. I for one however will be buried in a grave depth measured in feet or placed in an urn measured in cubic inches.
