I have been intending to post about Props for some time now. I decided on a 3 blade Ground Adjustable 60" Whirlwind prop for my Panther 130HP engine.
It was mostly just for the WOW factor. I understand that 2 blade are supposed to be faster. However, several things have come to mind since I have been running this. (not flying yet) We who used VW and Corvair on our KR planes, have been concerned about prop length for several reasons, tip speed and ground clearance, mostly. So, with a 3 blade prop, you can keep the length down and run at higher RPM, where you get more power from the auto conversion engines. However, I have discovered that there is another very good reason to use a prop like this and it is to be able to keep the idle low and still have the engine run smoothly. Even though the UL Power recommends an idle of 800 rpm, I find that mine will idle smoothly at 680 rpm. So why the disparity between what I am getting and what UL Power recommends. I asked them and they responded that their testing was done with a 2 blade 68" prop and that with the shorter prop, they would expect that I could have a smooth idle at lower RPM. So, I ask myself now, "Why did I never consider using a prop like this with my VW and Corvair engines?" I am looking for a prop for my Corvair engine. If anyone has one for sale please email me at flyk...@gmail.com and I will consider what you have. A 56x54 would be just about perfect.
