Yes, the lift coefficients of the two airfoils are very similar, and the
spars are certainly designed to support either RAF48 or AS5046 airfoil.
Reviewing the photos at http://www.n56ml.com/troy/ , Troy did replace
his stub wings with the new airfoil also, and he has verified that for me.
As a data point, the KR1 Motorglider plans call for a completely
different airfoil from the stub wing out, with the intention of flying
it either with long wings or short wings, as conditions warrant. So for
what it's worth, Ken Rand apparently didn't think it was a problem.
Having said that, Jeannette told me that the only KR1-b (motorglider)
that ever flew was the prototype, and somebody on the west did fly off
all the hours to get it past phase 1 testing. As with the Motorglider
installation, I'm sure there'd be a funky discontinuity between the two
airfoil joints, requiring an explanation at every airport you ever stop at!
But as was mentioned, if I had a perfectly good set of wings that were
finished and flying, I wouldn't go to the trouble of building new wings
for the plane....I'd be flying it instead! As a data point....I'm a big
champion of the new wing, but I've been flying Jim Faughn's KR2 with the
RAF48 wings for several years now, and it hasn't occured to me to
replace them. But for those who are building a new airplane, the new
airfoil is a no-brainer.
For those interested in the "new wing", see

(take them to Kinko's for printing)

I had somebody contact me a while back about the poor resolution of the
airfoil templates.....he had taken the jaggy images at the top of the
webpage and had THEM printed at kinkos, rather than the hi-res pdf files
at the "templates" link give above....
