I've looked at the site Craig mentions previously. It is definitely a
"do-it-yourself" electronics project, and I suspect the cost is relatively
low. Looks like they recently added assembly instructions - I don't recall
this being on the site before. I'd love to hear of someone building this.
Also looks like you can ow buy most of the kit parts from their "Store". 

MGL has an engine monitor EMS-2, which is an attractive price, but I have no
experience with this one either.
