Netters,

Perhaps time to repeat something I've probably said some years earlier.

If you can manage to arrive at Oshkosh a couple days before the thing
officially opens, not only will you very likely be able to find a
still-available camping spot in an ideal location like Paul's Park, but
by far the most enjoyable part of attending Oshkosh was sitting on the
bleachers watching the planes arrive two at a time - one landing long and
the next landing short. Watching the ground crews keeping arrivals
organized once on the ground while listening to ATC and the
often-confused pilots on a handheld is all just too good to miss! It's a
non-stop show starting about two days before Airventure officially opens.
It's the only chance we get to see many of these planes actually flying
and landing instead of just parked.

The crowds haven't arrived yet and vendors are getting their booths set
up and it's easy to walk around and talk to whoever you want without mobs
of people around you. The inner access gates haven't been set-up yet so
you can use your bicycle to go all over the place. Once the show
officially starts, pavilion and other inner gates are in place and
bicycles have to be left outside the gates.

For me, getting there a day or two early and watching the thousands of
planes come in while having the freedom to prowl everywhere on a bicycle
(a Dahon fold-a-bike) and watch everybody setting-up and getting ready
for the show . . . was the absolute best part of going to Oshkosh - and
most people miss it without even realizing what they've missed.
.
The Main Gate is open several days before the show officially opens.
There you can buy your entrance pass for however many days you want to be
there, plus your camping fee, plus whatever other fees they may have
added on since I was last there. Once you've done that, you've got the
run of the place until the show officially opens. I really can't
emphasize too much just what a treat it is to get there a day or two
early! It was by far the best part of going to Oshkosh. Two days early
is probably best if you want to get one of the leftover camping spots in
Paul's Park.
