************ Richard Siefert and Rob Schmitt have given you some technical explanations which are probably relevant and each point should be considered, however another way of looking at this is simply something called "over-propping". With my KR with a GP 2180 I've gone from its original 52 x 52 Sterba to a Prince 52 x 54 to the current Sterba 52 x 56. With the coarsely pitched 56, I can cause the engine to stumble as you are describing if I introduce throttle abrubtly as you did when going around. If the throttle is pushed in slowly, giving the engine time to spin up smoothly, there is no problem. In my opinion nothing is wrong with your carb or engine. You simply need to handle the throttle more gently. I fully agree with you about the benefits of a highly pitched prop. It doesn't much affect takeoff and climb performance but when you get up to cruise altitude the coarsely pitched prop comes into its own. You're pulling power from the engine much more efficiently and at a lower RPM - something very important with these VW-based engines that are so easily damaged by heat. The extra power that comes from running a VW at higher RPM's comes at a cost. One cost is much of the extra power being developed is being consumed by the engine itself, overcoming the additional internal friction generated. Overcoming this internal friction generates more heat. So . . . running at high RPM wastes power, overheats an already heat-sensitive engine, and is hardly worth the extra speed. Using a coarse pitch prop allows you to extract power using torque instead of RPM and once up in thinner air at cruise, it renders good airspeed at lower RPM and is by far the best way of doing things unless you're in a race and unconcerned about engine wear and longevity. Do make sure your prop bolts are torqued correctly.
