I just measured my tailwheel spring at the airport this morning. It
measured 1/4" thick by 1.75" wide by 12 inches long with 7 inches of
that attached to the fuselage. I'm guessing it might weigh 2 pounds at
most. Anything that replaces it would have to weigh half that at
least. I replaced my Matco 6" assembly with a light weight Aviation
Products assembly savings about 2 pounds and it moved my C.G. forward
maybe 1/2". I'm thinking there are more productive ways of moving the
C.G. forward if that is an issue. Feel free to experiment with other
options but I'm inclined to keep it simple and go with what has been
working on aircraft since the 1920's and has worked on mine flawlessly
for 15 years. I recall Jim Faughn had a fiberglass (I think) tailwheel
rod break at the Red Oak Gathering and had to do a field repair to get
it home. A tailwheel spring failure never crosses my mind. Go with
whatever makes you comfortable.
